I can’t believe Christmas is less than a week away! Before the big day, though, we have one more weekend of holiday shenanigans with our annual Tri-County Christmas dinner, followed by Prosperity Social Club’s holiday show on Sunday (if you read Tuesday’s post, you know how excited I am for that and why you should go).

This morning, though, I’m just taking it easy, curled up with a cup of hot chocolate, catching up on my blog reading. So let’s get started:

Clue Into Cleveland Blogs: The 12 Blogs of Christmas Edition

1) First off, a big thank you to WhyCLE for hosting this year’s Ohio Blogging Holiday Party. Our annual cookie exchange had a new addition with a Holiday Beer Exchange. I can’t wait to dig into my six-pack on Christmas Day. You can read the full recap at Why? Ohio Blogging Holiday Party!

A Season for Reflection

2) The holidays are so busy that it can be impossible to appreciate everything around you. In sights and sounds {part 3}, Poise in Parma reflects on a recent weekend filled with yoga, friends, family, and CPH’s production of A Christmas Story.

3) As 2013 comes to a close, Call Me Trouble looks back and celebrates her year with 30 in 2013: What I’m Thankful For. My favorite is #12 — learning how to make cheese!

4) Holly Hammersmith (who just updated her blog name – congrats!) shares this beautiful reflection of a scenic drive along the lakefront: Feeling at Home in Cleveland.

5) Our Journey recently attended her son’s first holiday show at school and wonders where the time has gone in Drew’s First School Program.

Animal Crackers in My Soup

6) Did you know Ohio Festivals has a second blog, Man-gi-am-OH? There you’ll find Kristian’s thoughts on food, family, and non-festival life. His family recently lost their dog Max and he has a beautiful tribute, The Two Maxes: A Farewell to the Hairy One

7) In Once Upon a Time at Garlic Fest, The Girl I Mean To Be tells the story of how she went to the Garlic Festival and left the owner of two chickens and a coop. My senior art project was a mural based on Waiting for Godot, so I am a huge fan of the chickens’ new names.

Run, Run, Rudolph!

8) The weekend that Scott and I participated in the Jingle Bell Run was a busy weekend for Cleveland runners. Go Run Jess recaps A Christmas Story 5K, which took place that Saturday and celebrated the film’s 30th anniversary. It looks like it was a lot of fun!

9) Lane Baldwin took a break from her busy photography schedule to run the Cincinnati Turkey Trot 10K with her family. Congrats on checking off another item in your 101 in 1001 list!

Last Minute Holiday Shopping

10) For the runner in your life, ROJ Running has 13 Gifts from 2013.

11) Smitten in CLE has everyone else on your list covered with Gifts for The Entertainer, The Epicurean, The Glitterista, and The Guy That Has Everything.

12) Need a gift idea for me? From The Cheap Seats’ The One With Spider-Man has me adding this zip-up Spider-Man hoodie to my list.

Don’t forget the card! In my bonus blog post, Tis the Season in CLE shares her five picks for CLE’s Best Boutiques for Holiday Cards.

As the holidays hit full-force, I hope you find a moment to relax and maybe catch up on some reading. Check out all of these blogs for inspiration, along with the other OHBlogging attendees Miss WineOH and Inaccurate and Unreliable.

What are your favorite blogs that I should clue into?

Kristian Campana of OhioFestivals.net (left) at the Pawpaw Festival

After driving over 20,000 miles through almost all 88 Ohio counties, Kristian Campana of OhioFestivals.net is celebrating his 300th Ohio Festival!

On November 22nd, he’ll visit Wooster, Ohio for their Festival of Trees.

This is the latest in a long string of festivals Kristian has attended, themed around pawpaws, skunks, pork rinds, twins, moonshine and giants. Along the way, he has entered eating contests, judged festival competitions, shared his experiences on radio and television, spoken at the Ohio Festivals and Events Association, and began writing a festival column in Edible Cleveland magazine.

As an accountant and Italian translator by day, blogging about festivals since 2009 has given Kristian the chance to use his Creative Writing MFA.

Kristian snapped this photo of Tim Conway at Ghoulardifest

For the 300th festival, Kristian will celebrate the arrival of Santa in Wooster, Ohio with a Window Wonderland, activities throughout downtown and the Festival of Trees at the Wayne County Red Cross Building.

Although most people think funnel cakes and carnival rides when they hear the word festival, Kristian said the Festival of Trees is fitting for this milestone. “My birthday is Christmas Eve, so a holiday festival will make it more personal. It may even take the edge off of turning 40,” he writes.

You can get your own Ohio Festivals t-shirt to wear to your next festival.

Because he’s hitting the big 3-0-0, I asked Kristian to answer me these questions three.

Clue Into Cleveland: I always love hearing why bloggers picked the specific topic they did. So, why festivals – what made you want to blog about this?

Ohio Festivals: In the summer of 2009, after a trip to Ireland gave me an insatiable travel bug, I started going to area festivals for something to do. The first few were close to home, but then I researched a bit and found myself taking weekend road trips to attend festivals a little further out. Before I knew it, I had attended 14 fests and a friend suggested that I blog about these experiences (perhaps to save her from hearing me rant and rave about them).

At first, I was most likely blogging to simply share my experiences with friends and family. But then I began to really appreciate what festivals offer – open doors to communities and cultures in a celebratory environment.

Now, I try to promote the festivals to everyone, wherever they reside, even though my accounts take place only in Ohio.

CiC: You’ve attended a lot of festivals; however, if you were going to create or host a festival about something Ohio-related, what would it be?

OF: My dream festival would be a Festival of Festivals, which would bring many of Ohio’s festivals to one location as an Ohio festival sampler platter of sorts. Each participating festival would hold a booth and either sell a food item typical of their festival, present info or sell souvenirs. Its purpose would be to bring awareness to various festivals out there and promote travel and tourism to all parts of Ohio. I also like the idea that festivals with similar themes (strawberries, for example) would see how other cities did their festivals and get ideas to improve their event.

An ambitious dream, but I think it could work.

CiC: If there was one message or feeling you wanted readers to take away from reading your blog, what would it be?

OF: To go out there and explore! Attend festivals and go visit communities, whether locally, nationally, or internationally. Learn from people, their traditions and their foods and try new things as you go about your adventures.

I think those that do will learn how magical the world can be and how important community is.

I also think they would have a lot of fun doing it.

Check out www.OhioFestivals.net for all of Kristian’s reviews, plus nearly 1,000 festival listings to enjoy year-round, all around Ohio. You can also order your own Ohio Festivals t-shirt to show off your love of funnel cake.

It’s been awhile since I’ve had time to do a Cleveland blogs round-up. However, there have been a more than a few recent posts and new-to-me blogs that needed to be shared:

Clue Into Cleveland Blogs, Snow Day Edition

#1 GeekCLE is your guide to geek culture in Cleveland – from info on local arcades and comic book shops to forums discussing the X-Men and tabletop gaming. Check out their list of Free Upcoming GeekCLE Events, including a Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Party at Mahall’s.

#2 Reading about the Doctor Who Watch Party led me to the blog that’s hosting the event – Every Bar in Lakewood. Every Bar in Lakewood is exactly what it sounds like — one guy’s journey to visit every bar in Lakewood. I’m late to the game on this blog as his most recent review is Bar #49 – Johnny Malloy’s; however, I’ve been catching up on his other posts where you’ll also find info on Lakewood events.

#3 Last Friday, I spoke on a PRSA Student Day panel about pitching bloggers and the media. I really enjoyed speaking on the subject and learned a lot from the other panelists @SaraShookman and @KateKelly216. However, the best part was meeting local PR students and talking to them about their blogs. One of those was Kate who runs Fresh & Bright Daily, a blog about the things that inspire her. I found some inspiration myself from her post on Ohio University’s End Slavery Week.

#4 I know the next post on my list isn’t exactly a blog; however, the site is a fantastic source of intelligent commentary on Cleveland. Belt Magazine is the next step from the team behind Rust Belt Chic. Each week they publish long-form features, commentary and essays, such as Possibility City by Policy Matters Ohio’s Amy Hanauer. If you like what you read, help support Belt.

#5 A fancy steak dinner may be fine every once in a while, but I could have a hamburger or hot dog any day of the week. The Cleveland Hamburglar is a great place to start when looking for your next hole-in-the-wall burger joint. If you’re going to be in the Westpark area, check out this recent review: Smedley’s Serves the All American Classic Burger.

#6 As Call Me Trouble prepares for her wedding, she has started a Wedding Wednesday series. With a new question every few weeks, she’s asking a group of couples to share their insights on marriage. In her first post, you’ll find the group’s Most Surprising Wedding Moments. Mine has to do with playing video games on my wedding night. Surprised? Probably not.

#7 Speaking of weddings, if you’re in the midst of planning one, The Dawg’s Dish has some recommendations of Local Wedding Vendors. Lots of great tips in there from when she got married over the summer.

#8 If you could spend five days living in a movie, which movie would you choose? I Need a Playdate asked herself that question in her most recent post One Movie, Five Days, Repeat. I loved her answer; it’s one of my favorite movies.

#9 Beth at Craveable Cleveland has recently been making a lot of trips between both sides of the city. Although the drive’s not so fun, she shares her thoughts on what she loves about the Eastside, Westside.

#10 I came across this last blog while writing for PR Newswire’s Blogs We Love series. Although the Cleveland-based ThoughtsFurPaws covers pet issues beyond Northeast Ohio, I’ve found it helpful as Scott and I think about adopting a second cat. Anyone ready to adopt a pet should read her post about PetSmart Charities’ National Adoption Weekend this Friday-Sunday.

What are your favorite blogs that I should clue into?

Last night, a handful of Cleveland bloggers headed to Tremont for July’s Ohio Blogging Meetup.

Before converging on the Lincoln Park Pub for Taco Tuesday and a chat about blogging, we browsed the Tremont Farmers’ Market.

I grabbed a peach and cherry pie from Gray House Pies and chicken paprikash pierogi from Pride of Cleveland Pierogies; however, my favorite treat of the night was a cucumber and mint popsicle from Popsmith.

Gray House Pies Stand at Tremont Farmers’ Market

New to Cleveland this summer, Tim and Beth Knorr are bringing fresh, flavorful popsicles to a farmers’ market near you. They make them in small batches from seasonal fruit straight from Ohio’s farms, organic cane sugar, and fresh local herbs.

Although the heat kept me from really savoring the popsicle, it didn’t stop me from discovering how fresh and delicious it is. I loved that you could taste the pulp from the cucumber.

Cucumber and Mint popsicle from Popsmith

After catching up with some new and old faces at the meetup, I decided I’d get caught up on their blogs with the:

Clue Into Cleveland Blogs, OHBlogging Edition

#1 In honor of our trip to Tremont, let’s start things off with WhyCLE’s Taste of Tremont recap. If you missed out on this year’s event, check it out and make plans for next July.

#2 I can’t believe Twilight at the Zoo is almost a week away! It’s my first time going, so Poise in Parma’s Know Before You Go Tips were really helpful.

#3 What songs are you listening to this summer? If you’re looking for a few good tunes, @KittenKaboom shares her Summer 2013 Mix List.

#4 We all could use a little more poetry in our lives and that’s what you’ll get on @ClevelandPoet’s Tumblr Love is a Donkey. After you read his most recent poem Hey There Lois Lane, head over to his other blog From the Cheap Seats for his Ohio Blogging recap.

#5 YP Pantry – the Cleveland Foodbank’s Young Professionals group – turns 1 this month. One of my fellow YP Pantry-ers JAM in CLE put together her top 5 reasons to join YP Pantry and what she’s learned from volunteering with the Foodbank.

#6 Something for your Cleveland canine: I love the new Dogs in the CLE blog. There you’ll find info on dog groomers, walkers and other Cleveland canine resources as well as a blog with posts like this Dog-Friendly Spotlight on Nano Brew.

#7 Along those lines, a shout out to Adopt-a-Pet for putting together these maps of Cleveland animal rescues and shelters on their blog. My cat Chloe (who has made the occasional appearance on Clue Into Cleveland) was a rescue. And as much as she drives me crazy sometimes, I can’t imagine our life without her.

Find Cleveland Dogs & Puppies:

Find Cleveland Cats & Kittens:

Although they couldn’t make it out to yesterday’s meetup, I had to share these recent posts from Rust Belt Runner, ROJ Running and Lane Baldwin Photography that caught my eye:

#8 A visit to the Cleveland Public Library or Avon Lake Library will put an instant smile on my face. I’m glad Rust Belt Runner agrees in her post Love for My Local Library.

#9 I had never heard of Dessert Hummus until I read ROJ Running‘s Friday Food. Simple to make and the Snickerdoodle Hummus sounds tasty.

#10 Scott and I are in the middle of re-doing our bedroom so Lane Baldwin Photography‘s guest bedroom renovation offered much needed inspiration. I’ve been considering blue paint like the one in her photos – I’m glad to see it works really well!

Whether it’s a trip to the farmers’ market, watching a baseball game or volunteering, I love the monthly Ohio Blogging Meetups because I come away with more Cleveland blogs to read.

What are your favorite blogs that I should check out?

I wish life had a pause button. Something that would allow me to take a breath when things are nonstop.

Since my first morning back from vacation, I feel like I’ve just been pushing forward, go-go-go, unable to gather my thoughts.

In addition to preparing for this weekend’s furniture move with Scott’s parents, I’ve been getting ready for some exciting news I’m announcing Friday.

One of the things that fell by the wayside was my blog reading – it’s been over a month since my last wrap-up. However, I made time on Saturday and Sunday to fix that.

Even if it was for only a few minutes, it was nice to get away into the Cleveland blog-o-sphere.

Remembering Dominic Cerino

#1 Before we get to the other posts on the list, Cleveland Foodie shared a beautiful remembrance of Cleveland chef Dominic Cerino who recently passed away.

In Ciao, Dominic Cerino, she writes about his cooking, his kindness and a recipe for short ribs to remember him by.

Family Fun in CLE

With Father’s Day this Sunday, here are a few ideas for your family:

#2 Life in Cleveland‘s Things to Do in Cleveland with Little Kids

#3 Find Time for Fun‘s Father’s Day Events in Northeast Ohio

Summer Reading List

Once it gets a little hotter, I’m looking forward to escaping to the beach with a book. Enjoy these summer reading suggestions:

#4 Cleveland Chick‘s Book Club: Heads in Beds

#5 Blog – The New Black‘s What I Read in May

Home Improvement

#6 As Scott and I redo a few more rooms in our house this summer, I love devouring design blogs and reading up on cool projects. And with my love of roadtrips, I really heart I Heart Cleveland‘s Amelia: The Little “Glamper” that Could. You need to check out her nautical Airstream!

Of course, home improvement doesn’t stop at the house and there are times we need to do some renovations on ourselves:

#7 BEaLittleWeird asks and answers Is It Possible for Me to Stop Yelling at My Kids?. Check out his latest Dadstractions podcast for more discussion on the topic.

#8 Am I There Yet writes about the Crippling Nature of Fear and signing up for fitness bootcamp. I’ve been dealing with my own fears lately and found the quote at the top really helpful.

#9 On the Patch.com blog Table for One, Monina Wagner shares How One Dog Changed My View on Humanity.

#10 Feeling run down? I know I already shared a post from Blog – The New Black, but her 3-ingredient Wellness Shot Recipe was too good to pass up.

Before we get to the latest edition of my Cleveland Blogs Round-Up, I have some news to share:

A couple weeks ago, I had the pleasure of chatting about Cleveland on Mystery Meet’s Find Dining podcast and the recording is now up.

The Find Dining podcast is for “foodies who love travel and travelers who love food.” Each week, host Seth Resler picks a different city and talks to someone about their local dining scene.

We discussed Greenhouse Tavern and I gave a couple more restaurant and non-food recommendations along the way.

Tune into: Find Dining – Cleveland Edition.

In keeping with the food theme, this round-up focuses on Cleveland blogs that made my mouth water the last few weeks. Bon appetit!

To Stay In or Dine Out? That is the Question.

#1 Eat*Drink*Cleveland previews SOHO’s Spanish Wine Dinner, which is happening this Thursday, May 9. Check out the menu on her blog post – I love the South-meets-Spain idea.

#2 As part of her “Because Prompts are Fun” series, iNeedaPlaydate writes about her favorite comfort food – Shepherd’s Pie and how making the dish stirs up childhood memories of visiting with family.

#3 I love catching up with friends over coffee. Julie from Wearing Mascara takes readers on a virtual La Croix date and catches us up on life.

#4 Each week, WhyCLE shares what she got in her Fresh Fork Market delivery, as well as the dishes her and Matt whip up from the vegetables, meats and random goodness they received. This latest post features a slow-cooker pot roast, the very best meatloaf, brat, beer and cheese soup, and more!

#5 Baking My Feelings contemplates the three things she would save from her apartment if there was a fire. She recommends making one of the three a snack (you never know when you’ll be hungry!) and shares a delicious Candied Peanuts Recipe for the road.

#6 With the temperatures rising, I’m in the mood for a patio and a cool dessert. Cooker Girl‘s Lemon Gelato Recipe hit the spot!

#7 Look, I’m a Cook’s grandmother turns 91 this year. Happy birthday, Oma! To celebrate, she tries her hand at Oma’s Cheesecake Recipe, which includes a trip to Hansa Import Haus in Ohio City for some Zwieback.

Let’s Work Off Those Calories Together

I’m stuffed just reading about all that food! Fortunately, I have a couple fitness-related posts to round out this round-up.

#8 Yoga returns to Tremont’s Lincoln Park this summer and Poise in Parma has all the details about Yoga Rocks the Park. Save the date because she’ll also be teaching the July 27 session!

#9 Maybe yoga’s not your thing? ROJ Running shares her Weekday Workout Routine. From Zumba and weight training to water aerobics and swimming, there are plenty of ideas to get you active.

#10 When it comes to fitness, I always need a <del>little</del> lot of inspiration and I often find it from The Year of the Phoenix’s weight loss and healthy living journey. Happy One Year Blogiversary to her and congrats on going six months soda-free!

Do you have any Cleveland-based blogs you’d recommend for future round-ups?
Let me know in the comments!

A few reminders:

Today’s the last day to enter my Tri-C JazzFest Giveaway. Enter here and remember to tweet daily for additional entries.

As I posted yesterday, today is also Superman Day! Here’s a story on NPR about Superman and Cleveland and here’s my #SuperCLE contribution:

Traveling Hulk got his hands on a red cape in honor of Superman Day. Up-up-and-away!

A couple weeks ago, I wrote about wanting to read more blogs and how I decided to start a regular Clue Into Cleveland Blogs round-up to get myself back in the habit.

I lied, though. I promised I’d be back every other week with this and I couldn’t even get past the first round-up without a delay. #BlogFail.

However, I’m a believer in try-try-again. So here we are – better late than never – my round-up of 10 posts I’ve recently enjoyed from blogs around Cleveland!

Cleveland Commentary

#1 It’s always difficult to put feelings about tragic events like this year’s Boston Marathon into words. But one of my favorite local running bloggers – MojaMala – did a beautiful job. After reading Boston Heartbreak, check out this updated list of ways you can help (thanks to Alicia and Jen for sharing).

#2 The Cleveland Plain Dealer recently announced they will continue printing the paper but limiting delivery to only 3 days a week. Again? Really? shares his thoughts in Good-Bye, P.D.

Around Town

#3 Let’s lighten the mood a bit. Jessica at JAMinCLE shares her Weekend ’round Cleveland Recap, which included a trip to the new Cleveland Flea and the Portside Distillery, among many other fun things.

#4 The Cleveland Indians are back! Cleveland Food and Brews shares his recommendations for Where to Grab Food and a Craft Beer before an Indians’ Game.

#5 Do you have that place in your neighborhood you mean to visit but never get around to? BiteBuff reviews her recent trip to La Bodega in Tremont. That ham, brie, and pineapple sandwich looks incredible!

#6 To quote Avenue Q, “I wish I could go back to college…” Just for one day, so I can enjoy Kent State’s Wines of Northeast Ohio class which Jess{ly} in Cleveland is taking. This is part 1 — I’m looking forward to reading where they’ll go next.

For the Home

#7 My friend BEaLittleWeird has me almost convinced to cut the cord from cable (the only thing holding me back is my addiction to HBO). However, his look at Why Aereo is Such a Big Deal has me one step closer. Speaking of streaming TV, how excited are you for new Arrested Development? I can’t wait!

#8 My cat Chloe has put many a scratch on our coffee tables. Some say it adds character, I disagree. Dina’s Days is to the rescue with a neat DIY project to Dress Up Your Desk or Coffee Table.

Fashion

#9 Growing up on the Chesapeake Bay fostered a very guilty pleasure for nautical-themed anything. So CLE Fashionista’s Nautical Fashions caught my eye immediately. I want that bracelet!

#10 With a new season of Don, Joan, and the gang comes the return of Mad Men Mondays! In this installment, Smitten in Cleveland pairs a classic Beef Wellington recipe with a lovely ensemble and wine. (Personally, I’d like to see more of Ken and his secret sci-fi writing this season.)

And there you have it! Do you have any Cleveland-based blogs you’d recommend I check out for future round-ups? Let me know in the comments!

After getting home last night from FablesCon, it was time to head back to reality today. But first, I had a winner to announce for the Market at the Foodbank giveaway!

After removing pingbacks and non-entry comments, the winner as selected by Random.org is…

Traveling Hulk wishes he was still at Fablescon

As I shared yesterday, all I have for our time at Fabletown and Beyond is love. In fact, if I had to nitpick the weekend, the only problem had nothing to do with the convention:

It finally dawned on me that I’m too old for 13+ hours in the car.

As comfortable as our CR-V is, I went stir-crazy around hour 7 (my GPS snafu also didn’t help things) and ran straight from the car to our hotel room the moment we parked in Rochester.

The only upside of the long drives there and back was that I had a chance to catch up on my blog reading.

While I repeatedly tell myself I’m going to read more blogs, more often, I never find the time. I realized if I’m going to get myself back in the habit, I need something that will force me to make the time (like 13 hours in the car).

Despite earlier customer service issues, my Nook made the roadtrip a little more bearable

So! Inspired by Poise in Parma and Am I There Yet, I’m going to start posting a Cleveland Blogs round-up.

I can’t guarantee I’ll do it every week, but expect a new collection of blog posts every other week.

For this first edition, I’m going to keep it short with a simple thanks to these and all the other bloggers whose posts helped me on the road to Fabletown and Beyond:

Because I couldn’t make it to this month’s meetup, Poise in Parma’s recap of the Ohio Blogging Volunteer Night at MedWish

Cleveland Chick’s An Open Good Bye To Phil Dawson

Craveable Cleveland’s delicious Creamy Polenta with Roasted Portabellas and Kale recipe

Call Me Trouble’s selection of Wicked Tattoos (I’m a big fan of ‘We’re all mad here’)

It’s a Hero Calling Bullshit on the Myth of the Supermom and embracing the messiness of life (Something even non-parents should read)

Burritos and Bubbly’s trip to Cowell & Hubbard and PlayhouseSquare Broadway Launch

Sarah and Derek’s And Then They Were Gone (This post captured a sadness I’ve been feeling lately with our family all on the Eastcoast)

Cleveland Frown’s Good job, good effort (On a personal level, LeBron’s not my favorite person. With that said, I have to side with CF on the treatment of LeBron by some in Cleveland media. Also, there’s good debate in the comments.)

Do you have any Cleveland-based blogs you’d recommend I check out for future round-ups? Let me know in the comments!

Disclosure: As previously disclosed, I was given a pair of tickets to give away to Market at the Foodbank and am also a boardmember of the Foodbank’s young professionals group.
