I can’t believe Christmas is less than a week away! Before the big day, though, we have one more weekend of holiday shenanigans with our annual Tri-County Christmas dinner, followed by Prosperity Social Club’s holiday show on Sunday (if you read Tuesday’s post, you know how excited I am for that and why you should go).

This morning, though, I’m just taking it easy, curled up with a cup of hot chocolate, catching up on my blog reading. So let’s get started:

Clue Into Cleveland Blogs: The 12 Blogs of Christmas Edition

6) Did you know Ohio Festivals has a second blog, Man-gi-am-OH? There you’ll find Kristian’s thoughts on food, family, and non-festival life. His family recently lost their dog Max and he has a beautiful tribute, The Two Maxes: A Farewell to the Hairy One

7) In Once Upon a Time at Garlic Fest, The Girl I Mean To Be tells the story of how she went to the Garlic Festival and left the owner of two chickens and a coop. My senior art project was a mural based on Waiting for Godot, so I am a huge fan of the chickens’ new names.

8) The weekend that Scott and I participated in the Jingle Bell Run was a busy weekend for Cleveland runners. Go Run Jess recaps A Christmas Story 5K, which took place that Saturday and celebrated the film’s 30th anniversary. It looks like it was a lot of fun!

9) Lane Baldwin took a break from her busy photography schedule to run the Cincinnati Turkey Trot 10K with her family. Congrats on checking off another item in your 101 in 1001 list!

After driving over 20,000 miles through almost all 88 Ohio counties, Kristian Campana of OhioFestivals.net is celebrating his 300th Ohio Festival!

On November 22nd, he’ll visit Wooster, Ohio for their Festival of Trees.

This is the latest in a long string of festivals Kristian has attended, themed around pawpaws, skunks, pork rinds, twins, moonshine and giants. Along the way, he has entered eating contests, judged festival competitions, shared his experiences on radio and television, spoken at the Ohio Festivals and Events Association, and began writing a festival column in Edible Cleveland magazine.

As an accountant and Italian translator by day, blogging about festivals since 2009 has given Kristian the chance to use his Creative Writing MFA.

For the 300th festival, Kristian will celebrate the arrival of Santa in Wooster, Ohio with a Window Wonderland, activities throughout downtown and the Festival of Trees at the Wayne County Red Cross Building. 

Although most people think funnel cakes and carnival rides when they hear the word festival, Kristian said the Festival of Trees is fitting for this milestone. “My birthday is Christmas Eve, so a holiday festival will make it more personal. It may even take the edge off of turning 40,” he writes.

Because he’s hitting the big 3-0-0, I asked Kristian to answer me these questions three.

Clue Into Cleveland: I always love hearing why bloggers picked the specific topic they did. So, why festivals – what made you want to blog about this?

Ohio Festivals: In the summer of 2009, after a trip to Ireland gave me an insatiable travel bug, I started going to area festivals for something to do. The first few were close to home, but then I researched a bit and found myself taking weekend road trips to attend festivals a little further out. Before I knew it, I had attended 14 fests and a friend suggested that I blog about these experiences (perhaps to save her from hearing me rant and rave about them).

At first, I was most likely blogging to simply share my experiences with friends and family. But then I began to really appreciate what festivals offer – open doors to communities and cultures in a celebratory environment.

Now, I try to promote the festivals to everyone, wherever they reside, even though my accounts take place only in Ohio.

CiC: You’ve attended a lot of festivals; however, if you were going to create or host a festival about something Ohio-related, what would it be?

OF: My dream festival would be a Festival of Festivals, which would bring many of Ohio’s festivals to one location as an Ohio festival sampler platter of sorts. Each participating festival would hold a booth and either sell a food item typical of their festival, present info or sell souvenirs. Its purpose would be to bring awareness to various festivals out there and promote travel and tourism to all parts of Ohio. I also like the idea that festivals with similar themes (strawberries, for example) would see how other cities did their festivals and get ideas to improve their event.

An ambitious dream, but I think it could work.

CiC: If there was one message or feeling you wanted readers to take away from reading your blog, what would it be?

OF: To go out there and explore! Attend festivals and go visit communities, whether locally, nationally, or internationally. Learn from people, their traditions and their foods and try new things as you go about your adventures.

I think those that do will learn how magical the world can be and how important community is.

I also think they would have a lot of fun doing it.

It’s been awhile since I’ve had time to do a Cleveland blogs round-up. However, there have been a more than a few recent posts and new-to-me blogs that needed to be shared:

Clue Into Cleveland Blogs, Snow Day Edition

#1 GeekCLE is your guide to geek culture in Cleveland – from info on local arcades and comic book shops to forums discussing the X-Men and tabletop gaming.  Check out their list of Free Upcoming GeekCLE Events, including a Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Party at Mahall’s.

#2 Reading about the Doctor Who Watch Party led me to the blog that’s hosting the event – Every Bar in Lakewood. Every Bar in Lakewood is exactly what it sounds like — one guy’s journey to visit every bar in Lakewood. I’m late to the game on this blog as his most recent review is Bar #49 – Johnny Malloy’s; however, I’ve been catching up on his other posts where you’ll also find info on Lakewood events.

#3 Last Friday, I spoke on a PRSA Student Day panel about pitching bloggers and the media. I really enjoyed speaking on the subject and learned a lot from the other panelists @SaraShookman and @KateKelly216. However, the best part was meeting local PR students and talking to them about their blogs. One of those was Kate who runs Fresh & Bright Daily, a blog about the things that inspire her. I found some inspiration myself from her post on Ohio University’s End Slavery Week.

#4 I know the next post on my list isn’t exactly a blog; however, the site is a fantastic source of intelligent commentary on Cleveland. Belt Magazine is the next step from the team behind Rust Belt Chic. Each week they publish long-form features, commentary and essays, such as Possibility City by Policy Matters Ohio’s Amy Hanauer. If you like what you read, help support Belt.

#5 A fancy steak dinner may be fine every once in a while, but I could have a hamburger or hot dog any day of the week. The Cleveland Hamburglar is a great place to start when looking for your next hole-in-the-wall burger joint. If you’re going to be in the Westpark area, check out this recent review: Smedley’s Serves the All American Classic Burger.

#6 As Call Me Trouble prepares for her wedding, she has started a Wedding Wednesday series. With a new question every few weeks, she’s asking a group of couples to share their insights on marriage. In her first post, you’ll find the group’s Most Surprising Wedding Moments. Mine has to do with playing video games on my wedding night. Surprised? Probably not.

#7 Speaking of weddings, if you’re in the midst of planning one, The Dawg’s Dish has some recommendations of Local Wedding Vendors. Lots of great tips in there from when she got married over the summer.

#8 If you could spend five days living in a movie, which movie would you choose? I Need a Playdate asked herself that question in her most recent post One Movie, Five Days, Repeat. I loved her answer; it’s one of my favorite movies.

#9 Beth at Craveable Cleveland has recently been making a lot of trips between both sides of the city. Although the drive’s not so fun, she shares her thoughts on what she loves about the Eastside, Westside.

#10 I came across this last blog while writing for PR Newswire’s Blogs We Love series. Although the Cleveland-based ThoughtsFurPaws covers pet issues beyond Northeast Ohio, I’ve found it helpful as Scott and I think about adopting a second cat. Anyone ready to adopt a pet should read her post about PetSmart Charities’ National Adoption Weekend this Friday-Sunday.

Tremont Farmers’ Market

Last night, a handful of Cleveland bloggers headed to Tremont for July’s Ohio Blogging Meetup.

Before converging on the Lincoln Park Pub for Taco Tuesday and a chat about blogging, we browsed the Tremont Farmers’ Market.

I grabbed a peach and cherry pie from Gray House Pies and chicken paprikash pierogi from Pride of Cleveland Pierogies; however, my favorite treat of the night was a cucumber and mint popsicle from Popsmith.

New to Cleveland this summer, Tim and Beth Knorr are bringing fresh, flavorful popsicles to a farmers’ market near you. They make them in small batches from seasonal fruit straight from Ohio’s farms, organic cane sugar, and fresh local herbs.

Although the heat kept me from really savoring the popsicle, it didn’t stop me from discovering how fresh and delicious it is. I loved that you could taste the pulp from the cucumber.

#1 In honor of our trip to Tremont, let’s start things off with WhyCLE’s Taste of Tremont recap. If you missed out on this year’s event, check it out and make plans for next July.

#2 I can’t believe Twilight at the Zoo is almost a week away! It’s my first time going, so Poise in Parma’s Know Before You Go Tips were really helpful.

#5 YP Pantry – the Cleveland Foodbank’s Young Professionals group – turns 1 this month. One of my fellow YP Pantry-ers JAM in CLE put together her top 5 reasons to join YP Pantry and what she’s learned from volunteering with the Foodbank.

#6 Something for your Cleveland canine: I love the new Dogs in the CLE blog. There you’ll find info on dog groomers, walkers and other Cleveland canine resources as well as a blog with posts like this Dog-Friendly Spotlight on Nano Brew.

#7 Along those lines, a shout out to Adopt-a-Pet for putting together these maps of Cleveland animal rescues and shelters on their blog. My cat Chloe (who has made the occasional appearance on Clue Into Cleveland) was a rescue. And as much as she drives me crazy sometimes, I can’t imagine our life without her.

Although they couldn’t make it out to yesterday’s meetup, I had to share these recent posts from Rust Belt Runner, ROJ Running and Lane Baldwin Photography that caught my eye:

#8 A visit to the Cleveland Public Library or Avon Lake Library will put an instant smile on my face. I’m glad Rust Belt Runner agrees in her post Love for My Local Library.

#9 I had never heard of Dessert Hummus until I read ROJ Running‘s Friday Food. Simple to make and the Snickerdoodle Hummus sounds tasty.

#10 Scott and I are in the middle of re-doing our bedroom so Lane Baldwin Photography‘s guest bedroom renovation offered much needed inspiration. I’ve been considering blue paint like the one in her photos – I’m glad to see it works really well!

Whether it’s a trip to the farmers’ market, watching a baseball game or volunteering, I love the monthly Ohio Blogging Meetups because I come away with more Cleveland blogs to read.

All this go-go-go has me feeling like this lately

I wish life had a pause button. Something that would allow me to take a breath when things are nonstop.

Since my first morning back from vacation, I feel like I’ve just been pushing forward, go-go-go, unable to gather my thoughts.

In addition to preparing for this weekend’s furniture move with Scott’s parents, I’ve been getting ready for some exciting news I’m announcing Friday.

One of the things that fell by the wayside was my blog reading – it’s been over a month since my last wrap-up. However, I made time on Saturday and Sunday to fix that.

Even if it was for only a few minutes, it was nice to get away into the Cleveland blog-o-sphere.

A couple weeks ago, I wrote about wanting to read more blogs and how I decided to start a regular Clue Into Cleveland Blogs round-up to get myself back in the habit.

I lied, though. I promised I’d be back every other week with this and I couldn’t even get past the first round-up without a delay. #BlogFail.

#7   My friend BEaLittleWeird has me almost convinced to cut the cord from cable (the only thing holding me back is my addiction to HBO). However, his look at Why Aereo is Such a Big Deal has me one step closer. Speaking of streaming TV, how excited are you for new Arrested Development? I can’t wait!

#8  My cat Chloe has put many a scratch on our coffee tables. Some say it adds character, I disagree. Dina’s Days is to the rescue with a neat DIY project to Dress Up Your Desk or Coffee Table.

#9   Growing up on the Chesapeake Bay fostered a very guilty pleasure for nautical-themed anything. So CLE Fashionista’s Nautical Fashions caught my eye immediately. I want that bracelet!

#10  With a new season of Don, Joan, and the gang comes the return of Mad Men Mondays! In this installment, Smitten in Cleveland pairs a classic Beef Wellington recipe with a lovely ensemble and wine. (Personally, I’d like to see more of Ken and his secret sci-fi writing this season.)

Traveling Hulk wishes he was still at Fablescon

As I shared yesterday, all I have for our time at Fabletown and Beyond is love. In fact, if I had to nitpick the weekend, the only problem had nothing to do with the convention:

It finally dawned on me that I’m too old for 13+ hours in the car.

As comfortable as our CR-V is, I went stir-crazy around hour 7 (my GPS snafu also didn’t help things) and ran straight from the car to our hotel room the moment we parked in Rochester.

The only upside of the long drives there and back was that I had a chance to catch up on my blog reading.

While I repeatedly tell myself I’m going to read more blogs, more often, I never find the time. I realized if I’m going to get myself back in the habit, I need something that will force me to make the time (like 13 hours in the car).

Despite earlier customer service issues, my Nook made the roadtrip a little more bearable

I can’t guarantee I’ll do it every week, but expect a new collection of blog posts every other week.
